SALT LAKE CITY — As outgoing Snow College President Scott Wyatt takes the helm at Southern Utah University, the state Board of Regents has called on a longtime educator to serve as the interim leader at the Ephraim college.

Gary L. Carlston, a faculty member at BYU's Center for Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling, will begin work as Snow College's interim president on Jan. 8, the regents announced Thursday. He is expected to serve for a year or more during the search for a new president.

Carlston grew up in Sanpete County and studied at Snow College and Utah State University, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He later received a doctorate in educational administration at BYU.

An education policy adviser for the state's Prosperity 2020 efforts, Carlston's extensive education experience has included work as a junior high teacher, a school principal and superintendent for the Logan City School District.
