SALT LAKE CITY — November was a record-setting month for DeseretNews.com.
DeseretNews.com and its associated mobile apps surpassed 40 million monthly combined page views last month, setting a new mark of nearly 40.7 million.
The faith and family-oriented news website also broke records in monthly unique visitors (3.7 million) and monthly visits (7.6 million). The old records were 3.3 million monthly unique visitors, 7.0 million monthly visits and 35.6 million combined page views, all which were set earlier in 2013.
The year-to-year growth for November page views was 48 percent. For unique visitors, the year-to-year increase was 37 percent.
The expanding digital growth has strengthened the Deseret News' national ranking as the No. 24 most visited U.S. newspaper website, according to Alexa, a web analytics company that tracks digital audience comparisons. That ranking puts it ahead newspaper sites like the San Jose Mercury News and just behind the Orlando Sentinel and the Dallas Morning News.
"DeseretNews.com and the Deseret News mobile apps have seen tremendous adoption this year as we've sharpened our focus on news and stories that impact families most," said Chris Higbee, general manager of DeseretNews.com.
The biggest contributing factors in the increase came from changes to the Deseret News mobile website, including the addition of high school sports statistics, which saw 50 percent growth, just shy of 5.7 million page views. A new iOS version of the mobile apps also witnessed 13 percent growth with almost 3.8 million page views.
"What's exciting about our recent growth is that mobile traffic is exploding. At the same time our desktop website continues to see excellent growth as well," Higbee said. "Desktop Web traffic grew by 12 percent in November, generating just over 31.2 million page views, and another record."
Social media has also been a major driver of growth as users of the website have increasingly helped to share and promote stories on the site, Higbee said.
"The majority of November's success comes from many small things that have been well executed by individuals who take enormous pride in their jobs," Higbee said.
