On this week's "Sunday Edition," Dave McCann visits with Tito Momen and Jeff Benedict about their new book, reporter Matt Brown discusses religious exemptions and a family shares their dying daughter's bucket list.
The "Deseret News Sunday Edition" runs weekly on KSL-TV at 9 a.m. on Sundays and highlights six areas of editorial emphasis: family, faith in the community, excellence in education, values in media and culture, causes related to helping the poor and financial responsibility.
The first segment of the show focuses on Momen's courageous quest to follow the convictions of his heart. His decision to convert to Christianity resulted in his imprisonment for 15 years. Benedict helped him write his memoir "My Name Used to Be Muhammad: The True Story of a Muslim Who Became a Christian."
The second segment of the show focuses on religious freedom. Defending individual conscience rights has often been divisive, whether the issue has been military service, vaccinations, union dues or school curriculum. Today, the battleground is the legalization of same-sex marriage, which is testing the limits of exemptions to balance personal religious freedom and equal rights for gays and lesbians. McCann and Brown discuss the issues surrounding the debate.
The third segment of the show features a focus on the family. The holidays bring families together to celebrate what matters most in life, but for those experiencing great adversity it can be an especially trying time. Since August, The Deseret News has been following a family that has taught us a great deal about gratitude and faith. Their little girl is dying, and a video shows how they are taking advantage of every moment she has left by completing a bucket list.
A movie preview is also featured in the last segment. Latter-day Saints and Catholics work together on humanitarian projects throughout the world. Now, for the first time, the two faiths have collaborated on a film. In the culture segment, Carole Mikita previews "Christmas for a Dollar." It will premiere on Dec. 15, 7 p.m. EST, on the UP (Uplifting Entertainment) channel.
