3AA high school football: Dixie overcomes sluggish start, rolls over Cedar

ST. GEORGE — After an early scare Friday, defending 3A state champion Dixie hit its stride in the second half and rolled past visiting Cedar for the 45-14 quarterfinal victory.

The Flyers advance to the 3AA semifinals next Friday at Rice-Eccles Stadium and will face region foe Desert Hills at 11 a.m. Early on Friday, things were looking a bit dodgy for the Flyers in their quest for another trip to the University of Utah.

Behind a pair of rushing touchdowns by Cedar’s Ty Bulloch, Dixie found itself trailing 14-7 with 9:39 remaining in the second quarter. Considering that Dixie beat region foe Cedar 41-0 just three weeks ago, it was a very surprising start.

Order was eventually restored.

Ammon Takau tied the game shortly before halftime on a 10-yard touchdown pass to Andy Appel, and then Miles Barker drilled a 21-yard field goal midway through the third quarter giving Dixie a 17-14 lead.

The Flyers weren’t done though. Over the final 14 minutes Dixie tacked on 28 more points with Drew Batchelor and Konner Aitken scoring on rushing TDs, Lukas Hildebrandt scoring on a receiving TD and then Braxton Ipson on a pick 6.

Dixie quarterback Takau finished the game completing 9-of-15 passes for three touchdowns. Defensively, Ipson led the way with nine total tackles and an interception.

In the loss, Bulloch finished with 86 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.
