SALT LAKE CITY — Alpine, Davis and Morgan school districts were named to the AP Honor Roll on Thursday for increasing Advanced Placement participation and success rates among students.
According to the College Board, which administers AP exams, 2,587 students in Alpine School District took a total of 3,311 AP exams with an overall success rate of 76.7 percent.
In Davis School District, 3,480 students took 5,892 exams with a success rate of 73.5 percent.
In Morgan School District, 108 students took 226 exams with a success rate of 55.8 percent.
Kim Bird, spokeswoman for the Alpine School District, said the district is proud of being named to the honor roll, which highlights the district's AP success rate and its efforts at working with minority student populations.
"We’re really thrilled, obviously, with being named to this," she said.
Davis School District has been named to the Honor Roll in each of the past four years, a tradition that district spokesman Chris Williams said officials hope to continue.
"I think our school counselors and teachers really do a great job not only encouraging students to take AP classes, but also to move forward and take the AP exams," he said. "Taking an AP exam can be a bit daunting, but as the numbers show, our teachers really prepare our students to be successful and of course the students are the ones who are really stepping up."
A total of 477 school districts from the United States and Canada were named to the AP Honor Roll. Criteria for the Honor Roll included a requirement of a participation increase by 4 percent for large districts, 6 percent in medium-size districts and 11 percent in small districts.
School districts also had to maintain participation by minority students and improve or maintain the rate of success, which is determined as scoring a three or higher on an AP exam.
Statewide, AP participation increased by 8 percent during the 2012-13 school year, the College Board reported in September. Utah was reported as having a success rate of 67.4 percent in 2013, well ahead of the national success rate of 56.9 percent for the same year.
