LAYTON — A Clearfield man drowned Thursday while attempting to swim across Holmes Creek Reservoir.

The body of Tyler Flint, 20, was recovered about 8 a.m. Friday. He was located by sonar in about 15 feet of water, according to Layton police.

Flint was swimming in the reservoir about 4:30 p.m. Thursday with two friends — an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man — when he experienced trouble. He told his friends he did not think he would make it across the reservoir, said Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton. Flint then began to go underneath the surface.

The man swimming with Flint tried unsuccessfully to help him, police said. Others at the scene also swam out and tried to assist, but to no avail.

Dive teams from the Utah Highway Patrol and the Davis and Weber County sheriff's offices recovered the body with the help of a cadaver dog and sonar equipment. Almost a dozen search teams had combed the waters at 2450 Valley View Drive until just before 9 p.m. Thursday, when it became too dark for searchers to see.

"As of now, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this death and (it) appears to be (a) purely tragic accident," Horton said in a statement.
