Could Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis be headed to an expansion team?
SI.com reported Thursday afternoon that New York City FC has extended an offer to Kreis to coach the team, according to a source. A second source could not confirm the news of an offer, SI.com reported.
New York City FC, a joint venture between Manchester City and the New York Yankees, is still 18 months away from playing its first game. Kreis is in the final year of his contract with RSL.
“We are aware of inquiries made as to the future availability of head coach Jason Kreis," RSL vice president of media and communications Trey Fitz-Gerald told SI.com. "He is obviously an attractive candidate. Our ongoing conversations with him regarding his long-term future continue to be positive and productive.”
According to the SI.com report, Real Salt Lake allowed Kreis to talk to NYC FC in part because the Utah team believes it can re-sign its coach who has been at the RSL helm since 2007. Kreis traveled to the U.K. this month to meet with personnel from Manchester City and NYC FC, the report said.
“No decision has been made about the head coach position," a New York City FC spokesman told SI.com.
This is not the only off-the-field news surrounding Real Salt Lake. According to NBC Sports' Pro Soccer Talk, RSL general manager Garth Lagerway has been linked to an open general manager position with Toronto FC.
