DES MOINES, Iowa — Utah Valley University freshmen Brandon Edmondson and Mykah Heaton ended competition at the 2013 USA Outdoor Junior Track and Field Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday.
Edmondson competed in the 1500m run at the renowned Drake Stadium, while Heaton took part in the 400m hurdles.
Edmondson missed out on advancing to the finals of the 1500m run, as he placed 18th in the race with a time of 4:00.95 — just 3.96 seconds back of the final qualifier in his heat. The Payson, Utah, native and Salem Hills High School graduate finished 11th in his heat but could've finished higher as he misjudged the finish line and stopped around 10-meters short.
Heaton finished 24th overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.64 and sixth in her heat. The native of Ogden, Utah, and Weber High School product finished around 3.5 seconds shy of advancing on to the finals.
"Both athletes were excited and knew that they had earned their way to be here," UVU associate head coach Kirke Adamson said. "They came out and weren't intimidated but unfortunately just didn't have great execution in their races. At a meet like this you have to be pretty much perfect and Brandon was right on that bubble, but stopping at the wrong line really cost him."
Jade Miller (unattached) won the preliminaries of the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.52, while Stanford's Justin Brinkley won the preliminaries of the 1500m run (3:49.90).
The 2013 USA Outdoor Junior Track and Field Championships conclude Sunday. The top finishers from each event move on to represent the United States at the 2013 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championship in Medellin, Colombia, on August 23-25.
