UINTAH, Weber County — A fire ripped through a home Friday at the mouth of Weber Canyon, destroying everything inside, including a large amount of ammunition.

Uintah Fire Chief Mike Marz said the back of the house was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived about 4:30 p.m. The cause of the fire is unknown, and the home is a total loss, Marz said.

Crews were limited to fighting the fire from outside the house because of ammunition that was inside the home.

Cari LaDrew, who lives in the house, estimated 30 cases of ammunition were inside, along with a new rifle that had been purchased in anticipation of her teenage son Darren's first hunting trip later this year.

LaDrew said she couldn't believe the call when it came, and she raced back to find her home completely engulfed in flames.

"I'm just trying to keep it together for my kids," LaDrew said. "I haven't had a chance to process it. I just hope there are certain things I can salvage."

Darren said he warned firefighters about the ammunition and heard the bullets exploding in the house. He had left about 30 minutes before the fire started and was down the street helping a neighbor, Kerry Rollins, repair a shed at the time. He returned when he saw smoke.

Rollins said he and Darren were the first people on scene. They found the back corner of the house on fire and attempted to extinguish it with a garden hose, to no avail, Rollins said.

No one was in the house when the fire started. Some chickens were killed in the fire, but three dogs escaped.

The Red Cross provided housing overnight for the five people who live in the home.
