Flags lowered in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day

SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert authorized the lowering of the U.S. and state flags Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

It's an annual event that honors those who have died in the line of duty.

Utah Highway Patrol trooper Aaron Beesley and Ogden police officer Jared Francom were among the police officers who lost their lives during 2012.

Nationwide 143 men and women were killed while protecting citizens and upholding the law.
