SALT LAKE CITY — Westminster College women’s volleyball team head coach Kim Norman announced Wednesday that Cassandra Fenton, Mayra Ramirez and Mandy Taft have committed to join the Griffins in 2013.
Fenton comes to Westminster from Helendale, Calif., where she prepped at Silverado High School. A 5-foot-7 setter, Fenton was named First Team Desert Sky League as a senior after leading the Hawks in service aces and was then named MVP of the region all-star game. Fenton helped Silverado to the DSL Championship as a junior and was named All-High Desert Second Team that season. She is a member of the National Honor Society and enjoys water skiing, wakeboarding, beach volleyball and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball.
“I am excited to be a part of the Griffin volleyball team,” Fenton said. “I’m ready to further my volleyball career and to learn as much as possible at Westminster College.”
Ramirez will join the Griffins after playing two seasons at Salt Lake Community College. The 6-2 middle blocker is from Calle, Columbia, and she prepped at Commercial Educational Institution Cali. Ramirez was named First Team All-SWAC last season for the Bruins after leading the team with 95 blocks. She recorded 222 kills and hit .378 while helping SLCC to a second-place finish in the SWAC regular season.
Taft is from Sandy, Utah, where she attended Brighton High School. She is a 5-11 outside hitter that helped the Bengals to a sixth-place finish at the Utah 5A State Championships as a senior. Taft was named the Brighton Athlete of the Season and also enjoys playing softball.
The Griffins will begin the season on August 23 as they play host to the Westminster Tournament of Champions. The entire season schedule will be released later this month and features 12 home matches.
