WEST VALLEY CITY — The embattled West Valley City Police Department was hit with another blow Tuesday when the U.S. Attorney's Office announced it has filed to dismiss eight cases tied to the department.
The eight cases, which involve the department's Neighborhood Narcotics Unit, were filed "in the interest of justice," according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office. No further information about the cases was provided.
An additional 19 criminal cases out of West Valley City were dismissed by Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill on March 20, all connected to detective Shawn Cowley. It was announced Friday that a dismissal from the department is pending for Cowley, and an additional 100 cases are currently under review.
Cowley has been on administrative leave since November, when he and another officer shot and killed 21-year-old Danielle Willard. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
