SAINT GEORGE, Utah — Dixie State used some late heroics to win the first game of the nonconference doubleheader 4-3 over Southern Utah on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Storm ran away with the second game by run-ruling the Division I rival from the north 17-6 in five innings to secure the sweep of the Thunderbirds at Karl Brooks Field.
Johnna Brown's (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) RBI double to left field on a 0-2 count scored Sheila Gelter (St. George, UT/Dixie High School) from second base to give the Red Storm the come from behind victory in the first game.
DSC (28-11) recorded the first run of the day when Anna Cue crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the second inning. SUU (9-25) came back to take the lead as Kadi Henderson put the Thunderbirds on top with a two-run home run to right-center field.
The Red Storm regained the lead at 3-2 in the bottom half of the fourth when Siera Phillips (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) scored on a RBI single by Marla Reiter (Rolinda, CA/Central High School). Kylee Bufton (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork High School) also scored on the play as the left fielder mishandled the ball in the left field corner.
The Thunderbirds evened things up in their next turn at the plate after Henderson added her third RBI with a base hit back up the middle. Mikkel Griffin came around from second on the play and made a diving slide in attempt to score the go-ahead run but was called out in a close play at the plate.
Kate Coffey (Fallon, NV/Churchill County High School) picked up the win in relief of Michelle Duncan (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) and improved to 6-4. She worked one scoreless inning with just one hit and struck out one.
Phillips led the Red Storm with two hits in the opener.
In game two, SUU broke through for four runs in the opening inning of the second contest, three of which came when Madison Resley hit a three-run home run.
But in the bottom half of the first, the Red Storm rebounded when the first three batters drew walks and Courtney Sherwin (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) hit a grand slam to left center to even things up at 4-4.
The Red Storm would pull ahead with eight runs in the third that included a three-run homer from Nicole Chavez (Chino Hills, CA/Ayala High School) and another three-run blast off the bat of Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, UT/Davis High School). Chavez had two at-bats in the inning, the first a 12 pitch at-bat and the second a 13 pitch at-bat.
The Thunderbirds would rebound when Kylee Wolf and Griffin drove in back-to-back scores to narrow the deficit.
The Red Storm added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Rochelle Jenkins (Mira Loma, CA/Roosevelt High School) hit a two RBI single through the right side. Jaelle Judkins (Saint George, UT/Dixie High School), Kylie Bartlett (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial High School) and Chavez all followed with RBI singles to put DSU ahead 17-6.
Coffey (7-4) picked up her second win of the day for DSU after allowing four runs on five hits over three innings. Phillips pitched the final two innings for the Red Storm.
Sherwin led DSU with three hits in game two, and Kristie Johnson (Temecula, CA/Chaparral High School) and Chavez each added two.
Dixie State is idle until Saturday, April 13, when it welcomes Holy Names University for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Karl Brooks Field.
