KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics announced the 2012-13 Division I Women’s Basketball All-America teams on Wednesday. Players were selected by the NAIA-Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association All-America Committee with Nicole Yazzie and Cydney Tibbitts from the Westminster College women’s basketball team receiving recognition.
Yazzie was named to the first team after leading the Griffins in scoring this year at 13.1 points per game. This is her fourth All-American recognition after being named to the third team last season and honorable mention in 2010 and 2011. She becomes just the second player in school history to be named to the first team, joining Shalee Fackrell in 2006. The senior from West Valley City, Utah, was earlier named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American team and was the 2013 Frontier Conference Player of the Year.
Tibbitts was selected to the third team after scoring 11.5 points and collecting 8.2 rebounds per game this season. She was an honorable mention selection in 2012 and was named First Team All-Frontier Conference and the Frontier’s Defensive Player of the Year this season. The senior from Pasco, Wash., finished the season ranked 15th in the NAIA in free throw percentage (.796) and 23rd in total rebounds (271).
Westminster has now had eight players named to one of the three NAIA All-American teams with another 10 being named honorable mention since the program was reinstated in 1999. The Griffins finished the 2012-13 season at 29-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship.
