A quick glance at the 8 teams headed to Salt Lake City for the NCAA Tournament

The eight teams headed to Salt Lake City for this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament were unveiled Sunday, and they include No. 1 seed Gonzaga.

The Deseret News has compiled a first roundup matchup-by-matchup preview of the four second round games to be played in Salt Lake City, beginning with Gonzaga vs. No. 16 seed Southern.

The Bulldogs, 31-2 and winners of the West Coast Conference title, will play 16th seed Southern (23-9). The winner of that game will play the winner of No. 8 seed Pittsburgh (24-8) and No. 9 Wichita State (26-8).

No. 3 seed New Mexico (29-5) and No. 14 Harvard (19-9) will play in Salt Lake City, and No. 6 Arizona (25-7) and No. 11 Belmont (26-6) will face each other. The winners of those games will face off in the third round.

All games in Utah, to be played at EnergySolutions Arena, are in the West Region of the bracket. All second-round games in Utah will be played on Thursday, with third-round games on Saturday.

No. 1: Gonzaga

Record: 31-2, 16-0 West Coast Conference

Quick notes: The Bulldogs finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in both the AP and USA Today Coaches polls. … Gonzaga beat St. Mary's 65-51 in the WCC tournament championship game. … The Bulldogs have not lost since Jan. 19, a 64-63 loss to Butler, who received a sixth seed in the NCAA tournament. … Gonzaga is led by Kelly Olynyk (17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds per game) and Elias Harris (14.9 points, 7.4 rebounds).

No. 3: New Mexico

Record: 29-5, 13-3 Mountain West Conference

Quick notes: The Lobos, former conference foes of BYU and Utah, finished the regular season 15th in the AP poll and 14th in the USA Today Coaches poll. … New Mexico beat UNLV 63-56 in the MWC tournament championship game. … The Lobos have won nine of their past 10 games. … New Mexico is led by Kendall Williams (13.5 points, 5.0 assists) and Tony Snell (12.6 points, 2.9 assists).

Record: 25-7, 12-6 Pac-12

Quick notes: The Wildcats lost to UCLA 66-64 in the Pac-12 tournament. … Arizona has lost three of its past five games. … The Wildcats are led by Mark Lyons (14.8 points, 3.0 assists) and Solomon Hill (13.4 points, 5.3 rebounds).

No. 8: Pittsburgh

Record: 24-8, 12-6 Big East Conference

Quick notes: The Panthers lost to Syracuse 62-59 in the Big East Conference tournament. … Pittsburgh has won seven of its past 10 games. … The Panthers are led by Tray Woodall (11.8 points, 5.2 assists) and Lamar Patterson (10.0 points, 4.4 rebounds).

No. 9: Wichita State

Record: 26-8, 12-6 Missouri Valley Conference

No. 11: Belmont
