OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University fell short in its attempt to pick up a series sweep as Austin Byler homered twice to help Nevada to a 10-3 win on Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The Wolf Pack (10-6) also got a pair of two-out rallies and a nine-strikeout day from starter Tyler Wells to salvage the third and final game of a three-game series. Kade Andrus led the Wolverines (7-8) with a 3-for-4 day.
"Sweeping a team is always tough but I thought we didn't do a very good job of doing what we know we're good at," UVU head coach Eric Madsen said. "Their starter did a good job for them but we expect a lot of our hitters and I thought we got out of our element today."
In the second, an error extended the inning before a two-out, two-run triple by Ryan Teel scored the first two runs. Shaun Mize followed with a double that brought home Teel to give Nevada a 3-0 lead. All three runs that scored in the second came in unearned against UVU starter Andrew Freter (1-1), who took the loss.
"Defensively we weren't aggressive and that cost us in the second inning. Three outs that should have been made and that changed the game," Madsen said.
In the fifth, Freter retired the first two hitters before Jamison Rowe was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Rowe then stole second and scored on a base hit by Scott Kaplan. The inning was capped by Byler's first home run of the day, a three-run shot to right center, to give Nevada a 7-0 lead.
The Wolverines got a pair of runs in the seventh with doubles by Kai Hatch, Andrus and Willie Pratt making the score 7-2. The Wolf Pack got three more in the eighth, two coming on the second home run from Byler. Byler finished with five RBIs on the day after also homering in Friday's game.
Andrus was the only UVU player with a multi-hit game on a day the Wolverines were out-hit 11-8. Brooks Klein had three hits for Nevada.
Utah Valley hits the road next week for five games; a two-game midweek at Texas Tech on Tuesday and Wednesday, and a three-game series at St. Mary's starting Friday.
