There is no question higher education is facing a crisis: tuition costs are on the rise, for profit universities are expanding into more of the market and there is constant discussion about the quality of and access to education. Because of these challenges, administrators are feeling pressure to reform and rethink the traditional university model and adapt to the opportunities and challenges of the future.
This week on Radio West, Doug Fabrizio explores the future of higher education. In one radio segment, Fabrizio interviewed Henry J. Eyring, an administrator at BYU–Idaho, about innovation in education and how to change the DNA of education from the inside out.
According to Eyring, innovation in education should strive to raise the quality of education and serve more students, all while decreasing its costs. To accomplish this type of reform, universities need to include changes people wouldn't expect, such as allowing students to customize their degrees and taking classes online.
These types of innovation are for everyone: students, parents, alumni, policy makers, etc. But in order for it to work, the changes must come from within, from faculty members and administrators.
