SALT LAKE CITY — The Senate Business and Labor Committee endorsed a bill Friday that would prevent police from citing a person who seeks medical help for an alcohol-induced emergency involving a minor, even if that person provided the alcohol.
Sen. Curt Bramble, R-Provo, said there have been cases of binge drinking where someone has passed out and been left alone because those drinking with them feared being prosecuted.
"We've seen far too many cases where kids have died because they couldn't get any assistance," Bramble said.
Immunity would be granted under specific circumstances, including whether the reporting person provides the victim's identity and cooperates with emergency personnel and police.
SB233 now goes to the full Senate.
