LEWISTON, Idaho – The fifth-ranked Westminster College women’s basketball team returned to Frontier Conference action with a 64-43 win over rival Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) on Thursday night at the Lewiston Activity Center.
Westminster wins for the fifth straight game and is now 13-2 overall on the season. The Griffins improve to 2-0 in Frontier Conference play while Lewis-Clark State drops to 3-14 and 0-3.
It was another fast start for the Griffins as they scored the first 22 points of the game. They would lead 24-1 with 8:30 to play in the first half and have now outscored the last two opponents 40-3 in the first 11 minutes of the game. Westminster shot 39.4 percent from the field in the opening half and held the Warriors to 17.9 percent to hold a 32-16 lead at the break.
LCSC opened the second half with a 14-10 run to get within 42-30 with 14:11 remaining. Westminster countered with a 13-1 run that was capped with an Allie Eastman layup to reclaim a 22-point advantage with 8:22 left in the game. When Nicole Yazzie made a trey with three minutes remaining, the Griffins held their largest lead of the night at 64-40.
One game after not scoring to snap a streak of 110 consecutive games, Yazzie came back with 19 points to lead all scorers. She went 7-of-11 from the field and made three of her six attempts from beyond the arc while also recording eight assists. The Griffins shot 42.4 percent from the floor for the game and made six triples.
Westminster had a 40-34 edge on the boards and came up with 18 assists and only nine turnovers. The Griffins held the Warriors to 28.6 percent shooting and just 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. LCSC committed 16 turnovers which resulted in 15 points by the Griffins and 12 fast break points.
Eastman added 12 points or the Griffins and added five assists with zero turnovers. She made two treys and grabbed five boards. Kelsi Wells finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and five rebounds and two assists. Cydney Tibbitts didn’t score, but she grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Tanis Fuller led LCSC with 12 points while Ornela Bacchini scored nine.
The Griffins will complete the weekend’s road trip Saturday when they face Montana Tech at 5:30 p.m. in Butte, Mont.
