All LDS missionaries are safe and accounted for in the wake of Cyclone Evan, one of the most powerful storms to hit Samoa and American Samoa in 20 years.
News reports indicate the storm has caused severe damage to homes and businesses, and at least two people are reported dead as a result of Evan’s impact.
The LDS Church’s Newsroom website indicates that the Apia Samoa Temple suffered “minor damage” in the storm. Other church buildings are being used to shelter “thousands” in affected communities.
“Local (LDS) Church leaders are assessing needs and are assisting communities with basic relief supplies (and are) working with government and humanitarian organizations,” LDS officials said. “More supplies are slated for delivery in the next few days as the church continues to monitor the situation and identify how to best help the people of Samoa.”
