SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team responded from a home loss on Friday night with a 3-0 sweep of Montana State-Northern Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House.
Westminster improves to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in Frontier Conference action with the win. MSU-Northern slips to 10-9 and 4-1.
The Griffins stormed out of the gates in taking a 25-20 win in the opening set. They hit .368 in the first frame with only two errors. The second set was closer as Northern held the lead for much of the frame. The Griffins trailed 23-20 at one point before rallying for the 26-24 win. In the third set, Westminster again turned up the offense and had 14 kills with a .231 hitting efficiency. The Griffins overcame seven ties to take a 25-21 win to sweep the match.
Westminster finished the afternoon with 45 kills and hit .240 overall. The kill total is the second-most in a three-set match this year. The Griffins also came up with three service aces and had a big day defensively with 10 blocks and 58 digs. They held Northern to .142 hitting and forced them into 20 hitting errors.
Outside hitters Ashley Marchant and Alexis Aalona combined for 24 kills and a .353 hitting efficiency. Aalona led the way with 13 kills and added eight digs. Marchant went for 11 kills and hit .385 with six digs.
Jovana Sisovic and Alyse Horton provided some spark off the bench with four and three kills, respectively. Kyndall Kordakis had 20 digs, and Madison Raines grabbed five digs and came up with some great serves during the opening set. Emily Atkinson had 33 assists and eight digs.
Hillary Isleifson led Northern with 15 kills and hit .303. Kelsey Williams added 10 kills.
Westminster will remain home for more Frontier action next week in the Behnken Field House. Next up is a Thursday evening match against Dickinson State at 7 p.m.
