MILLCREEK — The Salt Lake Conference of Mayors announced near unanimous support Thursday for the incorporation of Millcreek Township, with the only dissenting vote coming from Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon.
Mike Winder, West Valley City mayor and president of the Conference of Mayors, issued a statement announcing the support but acknowledging the decision lies in the hands of voters.
"The mayors state that it is in the best interest of cities to have other populated areas in the valley incorporate, and that this is consistent with their ultimate objective of 'wall-to-wall' cities for the valley," Winder said in a prepared statement.
Cottonwood Heights Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore presented the resolution to support Millcreek's incorporation.
The resolution cites a number of reasons in favor of incorporation, including preserving community identity and maintaining local economic control.
A debate focusing on the proposed incorporation will be staged Sept. 27 at Canyon Rim Academy, 3005 S. 2900 East, starting at 7 p.m. Incorporation will be on the Nov. 6 ballot for voters in the Canyon Rim, East Millcreek, Millcreek and Mount Olympus communities.
