OGDEN — A 24-year-old Ogden man was in serious condition Monday night after falling while rock climbing in the mouth of Ogden Canyon.

Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther said the man was climbing alone on the north side of state Route 39 about 4 p.m. Monday when he lost his footing, fell roughly 30 feet and then rolled another 60 feet down the mountain.

The man suffered head injuries and two broken ankles, Lowther said.

A fisherman in the area heard the man yelling for help and called 911, he said.

"If it hadn't been for this fisherman coming by, he could have easily laid there all night," Lowther said, "because he wasn't in an area where he could be seen or heard from the roadway."

Weber County Sheriff's deputies and Ogden Fire personnel were able to reach the man, render aid and carry him down the mountain on a stretcher. He was then transported to McKay-Dee Hospital.

The man's name was not immediately released.
