Sophomore forward Jade Tarver's goal in the 85th minute gave the Utah State soccer team a 1-0 win over Eastern Washington Friday at the Viking Classic in Hillsboro, Ore.
The Aggies improve to 5-1-1 this season and have won two-straight matches. The Eagles fall to 0-4-1 this season with the loss.
In the first half, Utah State had control of the ball the majority of the first 45 minutes, out-shooting Eastern Washington, 9-2, in the first stanza. Despite the offensive power, the Aggies were not able to find the back of the net. Eagle netminder Nathalie Schwery collected five saves in the first half. USU senior Ashlyn Mulford, who played all 90 minutes, had two first-half saves.
In the second half, the Eagles came out strong with two corner kicks by Haley Stading in the first three minutes of the half. Mulford was able to make stops on two Eagle shots early in the half to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
With Utah State's fourth overtime match of the season looming, Tarver took control. In the 85th minute, she took a pass from junior forward Mari Miyashiro and found the back of the net to give Utah State the 1-0 advantage. The goal was the second of the season for Tarver and her second in as many matches as she also scored in the Utah Valley match on Sept. 2.
The Aggies continue action at the Viking Classic, taking on host Portland State on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Aggies then return home to host Washington on Friday, Sept. 13.
