SALT LAKE CITY — A trial was set in the case of Curtis Allgier on Wednesday, the same day a hearing was set to discuss whether the man should be allowed to represent himself.

Allgier, 33, has been charged with capital murder in the death of corrections officer Stephen Anderson. The 60-year-old was shot and killed with his own gun June 25, 2007, while escorting Allgier, a prison inmate, to University Hospital in a botched escape attempt.

A three-week trial in the case has been set to begin April 22. Allgier, who has already had three sets of attorneys, has asked to be allowed to represent himself. He made the same request in May 2011 but later accepted a defense team from Utah County. A motion hearing has been set to address the request Sept. 11.

Allgier is facing other charges, including aggravated escape, disarming a peace officer, aggravated robbery and three counts of aggravated attempted murder — all first-degree felonies. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
