FARMINGTON — An Ogden man was killed on the side of I-15 near Lagoon Tuesday night after he was hit by a car while trying to put gasoline in his own vehicle.
Enriqui Vealero, 52, had run out of gas on I-15 and pulled his car off to the side of the road. Investigators said his car was about three feet away from the travel lanes.
Family members drove to his location to deliver a gas can to him, said Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.
While Vealero was putting gas into his car — and with his family watching — a 41-year-old Bountiful woman drifted into the emergency lane, hit Vealero along with the back right corner of his vehicle, Johnson said. Vealero was killed on impact.
The impact from the accident caused the woman's vehicle to skid sideways and be hit by a third vehicle. The woman was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. The driver of the third vehicle was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The accident was still under investigation, Johnson said, including why the woman drifted into the emergency lane. As of Wednesday, a decision about whether the woman would face any charges was still pending.
