Note: Viewmont finished with an 8-4 overall record and won Region 1 with a 4-1 record in 2011. It lost to Jordan, 43-7, in the 5A quarterfinals.

BOUNTIFUL — Brad Lloyd doesn't like to hear players talking about what they can do.

He'd much rather watch them do it.

"To be a leader, you've got to work hard," said the head football coach of the Viewmont Vikings. "I'm not big on excuses or talk. You lead by example. Once you are doing the right things, then you can start talking."

Lloyd said the Vikings will need quality leadership after they graduated the bulk of last year's starting squad.

Mitch Dalley (Amy Donaldson) Mitch Dalley (Amy Donaldson)

"We're going to be young," said Lloyd with a smile. "We graduated a lot of kids who were two- and in some cases three-year starters. So we're looking for guys to step up. We definitely have some kids who are filling those roles."

One of those is Mitch Dalley, a 6-foot, 175-pound athlete who can play anywhere on the field.

"He's does everything," said Lloyd of the senior who started 12 games last year. "He's a fierce competitor, hard worker, smart kid. If he was a little bit bigger, colleges would be all over him because the kid can really play."

Dalley said he and the other seniors take serious their roles as leaders on this year's team.

"It starts with teaching up the younger guys, helping them learn the system," he said. "I expect we'll come together, play hard and leave it all on the field every Friday."

David Black (Amy Donaldson) David Black (Amy Donaldson)

Last year, the Vikings only lost a single region game and beat nearby rivals Woods Cross (overtime) and Bountiful. Still, they feel like they have something to prove this season, and part of that is playing in a region that doesn't get a lot of respect.

"I like our region," said Lloyd with another big smile. "I think (the region title) is anybody's to win. I always like to be underrated. I like to be the underdog." He finds the "chip on your shoulder" to be a good thing — especially in a physical sport like football.

"We're playing a very tough, competitive schedule with Davis, Layton, Bountiful and Woods Cross," he said. "I purposely schedule tough games. ... And we're playing to win, but it's also about learning. We're hoping to peak by the time we hit region."

Lloyd's players said they prefer being in Region 2 to Region 1, where they were before the current realignment.

Alex Holmes (Amy Donaldson) Alex Holmes (Amy Donaldson)

"It's different style of teams, and I think it's more fun," said senior running back and linebacker Alex Holmes. "It's more physical, and it's hard because we play teams with bigger guys. But we're a faster team. If we play to our strengths, we'll do really well."

The key will be finding the right chemistry after losing so many veterans.

"It's going to be tough," said David Black, a senior and the team's quarterback. "We have a good chance to contend if we play as a team."

Added Paul Teisina, a senior middle linebacker and tight end, "We are focusing on each other, on coming together. We don't bring each other down."

That includes when guys make mistakes. Colton Hadley, a senior middle linebacker, said there were a handful of players who were academically ineligible at the end of the school year. Instead of being angry at those boys, the team's leaders are trying to help and support them as they try to work their way back.

Doug Hintze (Amy Donaldson) Doug Hintze (Amy Donaldson)

"We have a lot more team unity," Hadley said. "The chemistry is really good this year.

And regardless of what the stats or rankings say, the coaches know what to expect on Friday nights.

"We're going to fight hard, play for every minute," Lloyd said. "There is no giving up in these kids."

Coach: Brad Lloyd is in his fourth year as head coach of the Vikings. The West High graduate is 17-16 as a head coach.

Offense

(6 returning starters; Spread offense)

The Vikings will rely on their quickness and conditioning when facing teams with more size — especially on the offensive line. Mitch Dalley will return kicks and punts, but he will also see time at slot receiver and running back. Senior David Black will play quarterback, and he'll have plenty of options with Dalley, Doug Hintze, a senior tight end, and Blake Williams, a senior receiver. Senior Alex Holmes will lead the Vikings' ground attack at running back.

Blake Williams (Amy Donaldson) Blake Williams (Amy Donaldson)

Defense

(5 returning starters)

Seniors Paul Teisina, a middle linebacker, Colton Hadley, linebacker, and Taylor Davis, defensive end, will lead the team's defensive effort. Holmes, Hintze and Williams will all see time as linebackers or defensive backs.

Bottom line: The Vikings have a solid group of good athletes who are willing to play any position if it helps the team succeed. What they lack in experience, they more than make up for with effort and energy. Depth could be a problem, so staying relatively injury free will be key to the team's success.
