ST. GEORGE — Police are searching for two people who torched a car driven by pair of missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The car fire was reported Tuesday around 12:30 a.m. in the area of 1000 North and 2050 East. Firefighters quickly put out the flames. Fire and police investigators determined it was arson.
A neighbor reported the fire. She told investigators she saw two people running away from the vehicle. One of them was carrying what appeared to be a gas can. The two people then got into a compact silver passenger car and drove away, said St. George Police Capt. James Van Fleet. He said it wasn’t known if the suspects were male or female.
The vehicle is owned by the LDS Church and was is driven by two missionaries.
“We can't specifically say, yes, it was a religious hate-type crime or that it was not,” Van Fleet said. But investigators are not ruling that out.
Anyone with information about this fire should contact detective Adam Olmstead of the St. George Police Department at 435-627-4319.
