SALT LAKE CITY — Spouses would be jointly responsible for "family expenses," regardless of which spouse entered into a contract to obtain the service, under a bill endorsed Monday by the House Judiciary Committee.
HB452 is intended to better address the issue of a spouse — sometimes unemployed — who enters an agreement to pay services considered family expenses or expense of children, but later reneges.
"The biggest area where we see this happening is the medical profession," said Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, the bill's sponsor. The bill, Sandstrom said, is a clean-up measure for legislation passed last year.
Rep. LaVar Christensen, R-Draper, said he did not believe a change to current practice was needed.
"I believe the case by case approach is currently better," Christensen said.
