LAS VEGAS — The Utah Jazz are about to add another big man to the mix.
They're also about to get more physical and tougher than they currently are.
Power forward Trevor Booker has agreed to a two-year deal with the Jazz, it was confirmed to the Deseret News on Tuesday. Terms of the contract were not released, but it's worth $10 million, as Yahoo first reported.
Booker, a 6-foot-8 post player, averaged 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in his first four NBA seasons with the Washington Wizards. The Clemson product has a career shooting percentage of .534, mostly making hay in the paint.
Booker, who's 26 years old, was selected 23rd overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2010 draft and then traded to Washington.
Jazz coach Quin Snyder was impressed with what he saw from the physical 235-pounder when both were in the Eastern Conference last season. Booker had a huge outing in a loss to Atlanta, where Snyder was an assistant, racking up 24 points and 14 rebounds last December.
"He played well against us (the Hawks)," Snyder said of Booker after the Jazz's NBA Summer League win over Denver at the Thomas & Mack Center. "He competes. That's the main thing you can say about him. He competes. And for a coach and a team, that’s essential."
Snyder also credited his new forward's “motor” and said he’ll add physicality to the team. The way the Jazz will space the floor and with Booker's ability to drive with the ball and bang down low, Utah is optimistic he'll be a solid addition on both ends of the court.
"We were really impressed with him as a human being, just his ability to have a perspective on how to help the team," Snyder added. "There’s a toughness about him."
Booker still has to undergo a physical and sign his contract sometime in the near future, but his eventual signing will give the Jazz 11 players with guaranteed contracts for the 2014-15 season. He'll bolster the Jazz's frontcourt, which also includes fellow bigs Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Rudy Gobert, Steve Novak and Jeremy Evans. Summer League forwards Malcolm Thomas and Erik Murphy have non-guaranteed deals.
