David Whitmer's name will forever be associated with the Book of Mormon as he was one of the Three Witnesses to the truthfulness of that volume. As a friend of Oliver Cowdery, Whitmer was an eyewitness to the earliest events in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each of the Three Witnesses left the Church in subsequent years. Although Whitmer was the only one of the three who did not return, he never denied his testimony of the Book of Mormon. After his disaffection from the Church, he moved to Richmond, Ray County, Mo., where he lived until his death in 1888. He and Cowdery were buried in different cemeteries in Richmond. The image shows Michael Kennedy Jr. pondering the life of Whitmer at Whitmer's burial site in the Richmond City Cemetery. Michael, a Latter-day Saint, is a direct descendant of Joseph and Emma Hale Smith.
