TYLER BRIMHALL, Logan, basketball: A year after making statewide name for himself with scintillating shooting performances against Orem and East in 4A playoffs, Brimhall picked up right where he left off in last week.

The junior guard scored 30 points, knocked down three 3-pointers and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Logan Grizzlies to a solid 85-76 season-opening victory at Morgan.

As a sophomore, Brimhall averaged 12.9 ppg and 3.1 rpg, and he’s well on his way to eclipsing those marks as he takes on a much larger role for the 11th-ranked Grizzlies.

Brimhall was a Deseret News second-team all-stater last season.

CAITLYN LARSEN, Viewmont, basketball: Larsen opened the 2013 campaign with 26 points — including three 3-pointers, 11 boards, six steals and five assists in a 65-45 win at home against Mountain Crest.

The senior guard/forward averaged 17.8 ppg and 3.7 rpg last season, including a career-high 29 points to open the 2012 season.

That year saw the fourth-ranked Vikings get upset in the first round of the 5A playoffs by a single point in overtime against Fremont after a late free throw gave the Silver Wolves the lead.

Larsen was a Deseret News honorable mention all-stater last year.
