PROVO — Defending champion Tony Finau leads a talented field at this week's 54-hole Provo Open, which gets underway Thursday at the East Bay Golf Course.
Finau, who shot 20-under-par 196 last year to win by six shots, recently earned a spot on the Canadian Tour, where he'll play in nine events this summer. He's hoping another strong finish this week will be a springboard to his play in Canada this summer.
"The key here is the par-5s," said Finau. "Last year I played the par-5s really well. You have to kill the par-5s. Hopefully this tournament will give me confidence when I go back on the Canadian Tour."
Besides Finau, former two-time champions Nick Killpack and Brett Wayment are in the field as is defending amateur champion Mason Casper. Other top pros going after the $3,000 first prize are Clay Ogden, Zach Johnson, Chris Moody, Pete Stone, Matt Baird, Gipper Finau and Jimmy Blair.
After the first two days, the field will be cut for Saturday's final round with the low 30 pros and 40 amateurs playing the final 18 holes.
