Two pro and con articles on how to collect a gas tax based on vehicle mileage to replace the current federal gas tax failed to come up with a simple and inexpensive way to collect such mileage ("Should the current gas tax be based on miles driven?" "No, the current gas tax should not be based on miles driven," May 5). We don't need GPS systems installed or any other kind of tracking device. Each year the car goes in for state inspection and the mileage would be recorded and reported. That way each vehicle (new or older) would be taxed for its road use based on number of miles actually driven.
