Confused logic is apparent when John Florez conflates societal moral values and government functions ("Are we losing our sense of morals?" April 6). Charity is a pillar of Christian moral beliefs, but there is no constitutional basis for charitable functions with public monies. Additionally, equating personal moral values to obligated actions is specious except in the negative, such as "Thou Shalt Not Steal," etc.
To believe otherwise is to disregard the meticulous reasoning of our Founding Fathers, whose chief concern was prevention of tyranny by strict limitation of governmental power. To accept largess reduces citizens to supplicants, with outstretched hands, vying for our masters' attention. American greatness resulted from individual freedom, threatened today by government expansion, oft based on appeals "for the public good."
