Thank you to the Most Rev. John C. Wester for his powerful summation of the argument against the gun bill now being considered by Gov. Gary Herbert ("Bishop Wester joins voices calling for veto of controversial gun bill," March 15). In a related article, the bishop states, "We human beings live by sign and symbol." This can be demonstrated by the simplest choices. How much more important are such "symbols" as the flag of our country, the stately buildings on our college campuses, the sacred temples and churches where we worship?
What, then, can be said about a culture that elevates the gun almost to the status of a symbol? Of what? And why? Some studies indicate that Utah ranks fairly low in the incidence of gun violence. If this is true, why the obsessive and paranoid need for guns in every household and now even in schools and other public places? If guns are present, they will be used.
Bishop Wester is absolutely correct. HB76 presents a many-faceted and progressive danger to our society. From any rational point of view, this bill deserves to be defeated.
