Steven Warren's assumptions regarding Australia's gun ban are misguided ("Gun control Down Under," Jan. 21).
Both Australia and the United States (where no gun ban exists) experienced similar decreases in murder rates (31 percent) from 1995 to 2007. However, during this same time period, all other violent crime rates in Australia increased (assault by 49.2 percent, robbery by 6.2 percent, sexual assault by 29.9 percent and overall violent crime rate by 42.2 percent). At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased (rape by 19.2 percent, robbery by 33.2 percent and aggravated assault by 32.2 percent).
Statistically, Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women. It's really very simple. Gun bans take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens and therefore embolden criminals. The statistics don't lie.
