EPHRAIM, Utah — Snow College will play in the inaugural Carrier Dome Bowl which features the NJCAA's third- and fourth-ranked teams. The game will be played Dec. 1 in Syracuse, N.Y., in the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The match-up was announced by the Northeast Football Conference which will host the event. ASA (Brooklyn, N.Y.), the nation's third-ranked team and Northeast Football Conference champion, will meet Western States Football League champion Snow College, the nation's fourth-ranked team. The Carrier Dome Bowl is only one of two NJCAA bowls being hosted in a NCAA Division I facility.
ASA, enters the game with a 9-0 record. It will be the first-ever bowl game for the Avengers. The school started in 1985, known then as "Advanced Software Analysis." The college has since grown to more than 3,000 students, 20 programs of study and two campuses, in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Today, in addition to computers, ASA programs include healthcare, business and criminal justice.
Snow College is 10-1, its only loss coming Sept. 8, when it lost 47-30 to Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Geo. Snow is making its 20th bowl appearance overall and 10th consecutive. Snow won the JUCO football national championship in 1985. Snow was founded in 1888 and is the oldest two-year college west of the Mississippi River. This year it has added new programs in Natural Resources, Outdoor Leadership & Entrepreneurship and Industrial Mechanics, as well as being approved for its first ever bachelor degree program, Commercial Music.
The Ephraim college decided earlier this year, along with its flagship sponsor Zion's Bank, not to continue hosting the Top of the Mountain Bowl which the Badgers won six of the eight years it was held. "With 10 bowl games held last year, we feel like it is time for us to regroup and let our coaches and players experience a bowl game somewhere other than here in Utah," said Snow athletic director Rob Nielson at that time. The Carrier Dome Bowl will be the furthest east that the Badger football team has played in its 92-year history and its first game ever against an opponent from the state of New York.
The Carrier Dome is a 49,262-seat sports stadium located on the campus of Syracuse University where it serves as the venue for both football and basketball. It is the only domed stadium in the Northeast, and is the largest structure of its kind on a college campus in the country. The "Dome" has hosted numerous rounds of NCAA championships in basketball, lacrosse and track and field and hosts regional and state scholastic competitions in football, as well as NBA preseason games.
In a twist of irony which may make the Badger squad feel right at home, the Carrier Dome sports a large orange "S" at midfield which looks similar to the new logo adopted earlier this spring by Snow College. Snow added orange to its traditional blue color in an effort to distinguish its brand from the color used by five of Utah's 11 colleges. Syracuse has used orange with blue accent as its team color since 1890.
