SALT LAKE CITY — Deputy Utah Attorney General John Swallow won the GOP primary Tuesday to run in November to replace his retiring boss, Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.

Swallow had faced Salt Lake City attorney Sean Reyes.

He'll now advance to the November election to face Weber County Attorney Dee Smith, the only Democratic contender running for attorney general.

Shurtleff had endorsed Swallow, his chief lieutenant since 2009.

Shurtleff is stepping aside after a dozen years in office. He has been at forefront of national issues, including immigration policy, something Swallow plans to make a key focus on his tenure if he wins in the general election.
