CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah pitcher Chase Rezac was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round of the 2012 MLB Draft on Wednesday, becoming the 14th player to be drafted from Southern Utah all time. The Reds selected him with the 802nd overall choice.
The West Valley native finished the 2012 season second on the team with a .330 batting average and five home runs. He also posted a .528 slugging percentage and drove in 21 runs. Rezac was named first-team all-Summit League after amassing 42 strikeouts and recording a two-hit complete game shutout at South Dakota State.
Other notable draft selections from Southern Utah include Nick Freitas, who was taken by the Twins in the 21st round in 2009, and Ryan Jensen, who became the first Thunderbird to reach the majors after being drafted by the Giants in the seventh round in 1996.
