INDIANAPOLIS -- The Colts have decided on their No.1 pick, but they aren't going to reveal it publicly until draft night.
Colts general manager Ryan Grigson met with the local media on Wednesday and said the team feels good about its decision. The Colts will select either Stanford's Andrew Luck or Baylor's Robert Griffin III with the first pick of the NFL Draft on April 26 in New York City.
"We've known for a little while," Grigson said. "We've done all our due diligence. If there's not any unforeseen problem or anything like that, we're pretty sure what we want to do and what direction we want to go."
Most analysts believe the Colts will select Luck, but Grigson said he believes both players have a strong desire to be the best and would handle the role of succeeding Peyton Manning as quarterback of the Colts. The Colts had at least two individual meetings with Luck as well as a private workout. Griffin did not have individual workouts for any teams.
Colts representatives attended Griffin's Pro Day, but not Luck's, and also saw both players at the NFL Combine.
Grigson said outsiders should not read too much into how many workouts or meetings a team has with certain players. It comes down to a gut instinct many times, he said.
"Obviously, you look back and there have been busts with that first pick and things like that," Grigson said. "I feel like, personally, when you know, you know. I don't worry about past statistics and all those kind of things."
Grigson also said the Colts are optimistic about returning to training camp at Anderson University, but no contract has been signed.
Grigson was asked about the possibility of the team re-signing some waived players, such as Joseph Addai, Gary Brackett, Melvin Bullitt or Dallas Clark. He said it is possible that the team might revisit those players after the draft and college free agency shakes out, although there are no plans for that now.
"You never know, you might revisit that," he said. "They're all really good guys."
