SALT LAKE CITY — Police released the name of a man who died Friday night after he was run over by a light-rail train.
Joe Esquibel, 50, was pronounced dead at University Hospital, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Cal Kunz. Esquibel's city of residence was unknown.
About 7:30 p.m., Esquibel hopped onto a "coupler," a piece that connects TRAX cars, near 400 South and Main. As the train rounded the corner, the coupler severed the man's legs and dragged him under the train.
The man was in critical condition when he was transported to the hospital and died shortly after.
TRAX and police officials say riding the outside of trains is unsafe and illegal. The accident suspended light-rail service for about two hours.
