Former Springville High star and Chicago Cubs first-round draft pick Mark Pawelek is back in affiliated baseball after his contract with the St. George Roadrunners was purchased this week by the Cincinnati Reds.
Pawelek, Utah's all-time strikeout king, was taken with the 20th pick by the Cubs in 2005 but was released this spring after four frustrating seasons in Chicago's minor league system. He never made it past short-season ball and was 6-12 with a 3.80 ERA and 147 strikeouts and 79 walks in 149 1?3 innings.
A Reds scout saw Pawelek pitch recently in a Roadrunners exhibition game in Cedar City, after which the organization decided to buy the 22-year-old lefty's contract.
