CEDAR CITY — Southern Utah University gymnastics hosted its annual Red/White Intrasquad on Tuesday night with the Red team collecting the victory with a final team score of 144.300 to the White's 141.325. The night was a condensed version of a regular meet with only three to five gymnasts per event, accounting for the lower scores.
"There is a lot that we can improve upon," coach Scott Bauman said after the meet. "We had more falls than I expected and we'll have to clean those things up before Friday night. This was good for us to get some jitters out and it was great to have the girls perform in front of so many people."
The crowd of more than 2,500 people watched the T-Birds divide into two teams with Caitlin Kennedy, Click, Brittney Jensen, Jaworski and Anna Schumacher making up the Red team and Jamie Armijo, Bernier, Chernoch and Jeffrey making up the White team.
Kennedy and Chernoch split the vault title as the duo each scored a 9.750 on the event with Bauman and assistant coach Kari Louthan scoring during the night. Jeffrey collected the uneven bar title with a 9.800 and was followed by Click with a 9.700.
Click came back to capture the beam title with what would have been a school record of 9.975 after Louthan scored the routine a perfect 10. Jensen, a true freshman, finished the night with the floor title after scoring a 9.800.
Another true freshman, Jaworski, finished second in the all-around with a 38.700, but Click wrapped up the all-around crown with a career-best 39.075.
The Thunderbirds will return to the gym and polish routines as the team prepares for the season opener against Missouri Friday.
