PROVO — BYU quarterback Riley Nelson, who suffered a broken rib and partially collapsed lung Saturday night during the Cougars' 42-7 victory over Idaho, will not play next week against New Mexico State, school officials confirmed early Sunday.
Nelson sustained the injury after he was hit while delivering a 32-yard touchdown pass to Cody Hoffman in the first quarter. He was taken to the hospital and was expected to remain there overnight.
Sophomore Jake Heaps replaced Nelson and completed 15-of-20 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Heaps is expected to start next Saturday against New Mexico State.
