Guards lead Utah State past BYU 69-62

LOGAN Utah State broke open a close game in the second half and claimed a 69-62 victory over BYU before a sellout crowd Friday night at The Spectrum.

In the season-opener for both teams, the Aggies (1-0) enjoyed an 11-0 run during a five-minute stretch midway through the second half and pulled away against the visiting Cougars (0-1).

USU trailed, 42-38, with 11 minutes remaining in the game before taking control thanks to the scoring of guards Brockeith Pane and Preston Medlin.

With four minutes left, the Aggies led by as many as 11 55-44 as BYU struggled offensively.

Pane finished with a game-high 21 points while Medlin added 15, including a pair of 3-pointers in the second half.

Noah Hartsock led BYU with a team-high 18 points and Charles Abouo had 16.
