The New York Times took a quick behind-the-scenes look at the Oakland LDS Temple this week, referring to it as a "five-spired white granite landmark" in the Bay Area.
In a breezy, pithy style, the facts-and-figures online-only item talks about what the temple is, what goes on inside the temple, the relationship between the temple and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' genealogical efforts and some information about the construction of the temple.
Along the way, the piece also manages to mention "The Book of Mormon" musical, the little-known tidbit that the San Francisco Warriors professional basketball team once practiced on the adjacent stake center's basketball court and the fact NBA star Wilt Chamberlain wore the number 13. Go figure.
The story was the product of the Bay Citizen, "a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization providing local coverage of the San Francisco Bay Area for The New York Times."
