Orioles third-base coach John Russell is a big boy. He can look out for himself. Yet, when Baltimore visited Pittsburgh during interleague play this week, Orioles manager Buck Showalter had Russell and bench coach Willie Randolph trade jobs. Russell was fired as Pirates manager last year and Showalter explained he wanted him to be able to avoid "catcalls" from the stands.

Really? Catcalls? Has it come to that?

Name game

SABR member Stew Thornley pointed out that, for the first time in baseball history, one Rene (Tosini) pinch-hit for another (Rivera) for the Twins last Sunday. And San Jose Mercury News Giants beat writer Andrew Baggarly reported another first occurred Tuesday when a pair of Casillas faced each other: Giants reliever Santiago vs. Twins second baseman Alexei.
