The article by Jay Evensen on pennies ("Time for U.S. to stop making pennies," June 16) and why we should get rid of them was interesting.
In the same issue of the paper were ads for various items with prices all ending in 99 cents, including a TV for $399.99. Would a business be willing to admit that the cost of the TV is really $400, or would it take a loss of 4 cents and sell for only $399.95?
The other problem with eliminating pennies is sales tax. Would state, city, county and other governments be willing to round off the tax the customer pays to the nearest nickel?
