SALT LAKE CITY — Kane Wasalenchuk will be in Salt Lake City this week to play in the MonaVie International Racquetball Tournament at the Sports Mall.
And just who is Wasalenchuk? Consensus is the Canadian is the greatest racquetball player of all time. Over the past three years he has not lost a single match. His record stands at 165-0. He is the first player in the history of the sport to post an undefeated season.
One writer said he is the best racquetball player the world has ever seen. He is the five-time World Champion, five-time U.S. Open champion and three-time Pro National champion.
The tournament, the first professional event in Utah, will begin Thursday with a pro-am. The professional division will begin Friday with the finals on Saturday. There will be a free junior clinic on Saturday.
This is expected to be one of Wasalenchuk's toughest tournaments.
Included in the field will be Rocky Carson of California, ranked No. 2 in the world and five-time outdoor racquetball champion. Thus far he has come the closest to beating Wasalenchuk.
Ben Croft of Illinois is ranked No. 3. He is among the younger corps of players coming into the sport and is expected to become one of the premier players.
Brian Griffiths, tournament spokesman, said the top-10 players in the world have entered this event, "and more than 30 of the world's best players will be competing."
He also noted that the event will be broadcast live on the International Racquetball Tournament network.
